Nee Chang Chock was the daughter of Chock Chin and his third Chinese wife, Chun Shee.
She was born on 17 February 1908 in Hanalei, and was married to Harry Chow Wong on 31 August 1931 in Honolulu. They lived in Honolulu and she taught school there.
On her gravestone it reads, Retired schoolteacher, Aloha. She passed away on 17 January 2002 in Honolulu, having lived a beautiful, long, life.
You can visit her grave at Nuuanu Memorial Park in Honolulu.
I visited Nee Chang and Harry on a trip to Hawaii in 1981, was so happy to meet one of Daddy’s sisters.
She and Harry were not able to have children, so she showered her love and affection on her many nieces and nephews. I have heard from some of them who said she was their favorite auntie, and always had time to listen to them and make them feel special.
She was instrumental in preparing the Chock Chin family history that was included in the publication called “Chinese Historic Sites and Pioneer Families of Kauai”, a Local History Project of Hawaii Chinese History Center, Inc. (Published in 1979, revised in 1980.)
I was made aware of this invaluable book by Jeff Zumwalt — a descendant of Janet Chock — who I was able to chat with on familysearch.org private messaging. I found a used copy on Amazon in January 2017 and it has opened up a vast world of knowledge to me and my family. The family stories that Nee Chang so carefully chronicled in there are the foundation for much of the content on this website.
